This large-scale sculpture marks a seminal period in Bertoia's work as his oeuvre begins to crystallize into several series that would define him as an artist. The surrealist mass in the center of this composition is surrounded on one side by a cluster of welded nail forms. These disparate forms contradict and balance each other, predicting the fountains, dandelions and bush sculptures of subsequent decades.
