Following his "novecento" style coffee table for the Contini-Bonacossi family (1932), Ponti further developed this practical design with its utilitarian compartments for the rationalist interior of the 1936 Milan Triennale. He continued to evolve this form into many versions until the early 1940s with this series executed in Italian walnut.
