Louis Lozowick's works of the twenties and thirties exhibit a fascination with urban landscapes. He frequently represents nonspecific architectural structures such as factories, elevated tracks, and bridges. Evocative of city living, his paintings maintain a universal appeal in their abstract rendering of buildings. At this time, cities were rapidly developing; tall buildings were beginning to take up more and more real estate, encroaching on domestic spaces. The verticality and dramatic backlighting gives this dense, nocturnal scene a towering effect. Lozowick is known for his cityscapes and this canvas captures his ominous outlook during this phase of his career.
