According to Jack Fields, president of Edward Fields, it was the original introduction of a series of Raymond Loewy-designed carpets by his father's company in 1952 that launched the concept of "area" rugs. At the time, it had been more common for the contemporary homeowner to use wall-to-wall carpeting to cover the often unfinished floors in newly constructed post-war housing.
