Among Bertoia's earliest abstract paintings, this image foreshadows the sculptural screens produced for General Motors (1953) and Manufacturers Hanover Trust (1954). Using an ink roller, Bertoia created a dark and moody background for the image. This surface was inscribed with various biomorphic shapes, concentric ovals, diamonds and starbursts. The final layer is composed of trapezoidal blocks of saturated yellow and white. A block of wood was used as a stamp to repeat the form across the surface. A rare and exceptional painting by the sculptor.
