Philip Johnson's Glass House of 1949 was the first glass walled domestic structure built in the United States and is widely considered an icon of the early modern age. In 1954, realizing the original overhead lighting of the Glass House was not conducive to pleasurable living, Johnson designed a large floorlamp to illuminate the space of the living area. Initially designed with three legs, the lamp proved to be unstable, and four legs were developed for the production lamps. Offered here are two examples of the noteworthy lamp design by the iconoclastic Modernist.
