Bertoia's sounding sculptures are widely recognized for their minimal aesthetic and distinctive sound. Bertoia developed the beryllium copper alloy to enhance the sound emanated from the sculpture when strummed or tapped. The pitch of each sculpture is slightly different, based on the height, the gauge of the rods, and the proportionate mass of the weighted top.
