Originally designed for a competition in 1956, Panton's "S" chair was the first cantilevered chair to be made from a continuous piece of plywood. The chair's form is related to Reitveld's earlier "Zig-Zag" chair design, but demonstrates a greater fluidity due to its unique construction. Panton's "Art chairs" of 1982 were carved from this design.
