Italian designer and glassmaker Tobia Scarpa is widely celebrated for his designs incorporating new technologies while elegantly maintaining form and function. We honor Scarpa's contributions to design and have handled more than 125 lots to date.

Design is a profession without a rule book...that which remains, and is worth talking about, is that final and concrete result: the object.

Tobia Scarpa

Interesting Facts of Note

In 1964, Afra and Tobia Scarpa began their collaboration with the Benetton clothing company which included the designs the company’s first textile factories and the offices in New York, Paris, and Freiburg, Germany.

The Papillion lamp (1973) for FLOS was one of the first lighting designs to use halogen technology.

A recent resurgence in popularity of Scarpa’s furniture design landed the Soriana sofa in the collections of Nate Berkus, Kelly Wearstler, and the Manhattan office of fashion startup Trunk Club.

follow artist

Tobia Scarpa has had a widely successful career with artistic outputs ranging from Murano glass and postmodern furniture to lighting and architecture. His design uses new technologies while elegantly maintaining form and function. He was born in Venice in 1935 to architect and glassmaker Carlo Scarpa whose stylistic influence would become prevalent in Tobia’s work.

While attending the Instituto Universitario di Architettura in Venice he met wife and colleague Afra Bianchin. After graduating in 1957, Scarpa apprenticed at Venini until 1961. Afra and Tobia became an incredible force collaborating on numerous important designs throughout their careers. In 1960 the couple designed and opened their office in her hometown of Montebelluna, Italy. Their most iconic designs include the Bastiano sofa (1961) for Gavina, the Soriana armchair (1968) for Cassina, the Coronado sofa (1966) for B&B Italia among many others for clients such as FLOS and Knoll International.

Scarpa’s contributions to design are widely celebrated. He was presented with the Compasso d'Oro in 1970, the International Forum Design Hannover Award in 1992, and a second Compasso d’Oro award for his design career in 2008. His designs are held in the esteemed collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, and Musée du Louvre in Paris. Tobia Scarpa lives and works in Venice.
